Brought into the Kolkata Knight Riders’ outfit as replacement for the injured Chris Lynn, Johan Botha has become the seventh Sydney Sixers’ contracted star to be part of the Indian Premier League, 2015. The South African all-rounder has participated in earlier editions of the tournament as part of Delhi Daredevils and Rajasthan Royals.

With Lynn injured, KKR coach Trevor Bayliss, who is also the head coach of the Sixers, called up Botha for the vacant slot. “Trevor Bayliss called me actually, and he wanted to know what my plans were for the next two months. He asked me if I would like to join KKR, and I said of course,” Botha was quoted as saying in response to offer.

“I went into the IPL auction, didn’t get picked up and thought that was it. I had started making plans to go to South Africa around early May, but now my plans have changed,” he added.

Back on the circuit and ready to compete as KKR look forward to defend their title, the 32-year old’s experience is bound to strengthen the side. Geared up to be part of the IPL once again, Botha was quoted saying, “I think the simple thing is just to play cricket and to practice most days.”
“That is what I love doing - just to go out and train with the guys and work on my own skills. Then there are also the fanatic fans and some of the best players in the World,” he added.

Reflecting on the tournament that offers varied and dynamic experience he said, “The IPL is an opportunity to keep learning as you go along, and not just learn about conditions, but learn about different players and different coaches as well.”

Speaking about the opportunity that has come his way, Botha has said, “Chris Lynn got injured in the last (Sheffield) Shield game, and Shakib Al Hasan has a series against Pakistan in the middle of the IPL, so it worked out nicely that I could fill in and hopefully play a couple of games.”

Asked about what three things he would be packing to for the long tournament, he replied “Hopefully enough cricket equipment first of all; enough bats. Just in case a couple of them break along the way, so good equipment first.

“Then a few extra snacks, just in case you run a bit low on fuel. And third is all the gadgets to keep you busy - kindle, phone, all the chargers and all the stuff to keep you busy when you are away from cricket, where you will spend most of the time just in your hotel.”
